Children's Transport Services

The state's only Level 1 trauma center has taken its emergency transportation service a step further with the addition of an "intensive care unit on wheels" for children and newborns in need of services at Children's of Mississippi Hospital and Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants.

The state-of-the-art pediatric ambulance with its team of specially trained pediatric and neonatal nurses and paramedics is an addition to University of Mississippi Medical Center's emergency response fleet.

Children's ambulance

The children's ambulance is specially designed and equipped for kid-sized care, delivering young patients to Children's of Mississippi Hospital, the state's only facility devoted exclusively to the care of sick and injured children. The sophisticated equipment and experienced medical team provide young patients with a higher level of care usually found in emergency transport service.

Neonatal transport

Ambulance and helicopter transports with special incubators are available to bring babies in need of medical attention to UMMC facilities, including the neonatal intensive care unit. Equipment includes neonatal ventilators and infant-sized equipment, all specially designed for our youngest patients. Nitric oxide is available if needed to raise the infant's oxygen levels.

Each year, an average of 250 to 450 neonates are transferred from other hospitals to UMMC. A neonate is a baby that has been under hospital care since birth. Referrals for the newborn team are coordinated by UMMC physicians trained in neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and these specialists remain in contact with the team to manage care as needed en route.

Whether traveling by air or ground, the transport team includes specialized neonatal nurse practitioners and clinicians available 24 hours a day. They carefully consider the baby's condition, hospital location and other factors when deciding whether to send the helicopter or an ambulance to transport the sick infant.
